On Service, Following ions, & Volunteering with Jersey Cares CEO Brian Dean, Ep. 145
Where do you go when you don’t know how to start on your volunteer journey? Try Jersey Cares, or one of its similar counterparts in your state, which connects volunteers with nonprofits everyday. Additionally, the organization leads trainings, offers guidance, and oversees volunteer projects. A nonprofit’s nonprofit.  Today on Be The Good with Kate, it is my honor to speak with Brian Dean, the President & CEO of Jersey Cares. Wholehearted Leadership & the Art of the Possible with Dr. Lynette Fraga, Ep. 144
Wholehearted Leadership & the Art of the Possible with Dr. Lynette Fraga, Ep. 144
How you show up matters. And showing up as your whole self? That changes everything. This week on Be The Good with Kate, we’re ed by the powerhouse Dr. Lynette M. Fraga: leadership coach, strategic consultant, speaker, and founder of Fiercely Forward, LLC. With over 30 years of experience in mission-driven work spanning nonprofits, education, federal programs, and even a tech startup, Lynette brings heart and deep insight into what it means to lead with authenticity and impact. From her beginnings in early childhood classrooms to becoming the CEO of Child Care Aware of America, Dr. Fraga’s journey is a testament to the evolving nature of careers -- and the power of aligning your work with your values. In this episode, we talk about: Why a career doesn’t have to be just one thing How digging deep into yourself can unlock meaningful impact (a recurring theme around here, anyone?!) The power of curiosity in leadership and connection Why putting people at the center is the key to real, sustainable progress What it means to embrace “the art of the possible” in your life and work If you've ever felt boxed in by titles, expectations, or the “shoulds” of a traditional path, this conversation will open your eyes to what’s possible when you lead with intention and heart. Lynette reminds us that we each have a role to play in creating positive change—and it starts with showing up fully, for ourselves and others. ------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to Be The Good with Kate. Motivational Check, with Cancer Warrior Terry Tucker, Rebroadcast: Be The Good with Kate
I use the word ‘inspiring’ a lot, but for good reason. And Terry Tucker is another level of the definition of the word. And the quotability is through the roof. And the stories? Don’t miss one second of this revisit of Terry’s episode of Be The Good with Kate. Terry is facing the inevitable that cancer will take him from this Earth in the near future, yet has chosen a mindset of using the time he has left to do all he can to make a difference in this world. Terry founded Motivational Check LLC, is an author and motivational speaker, cancer warrior and amputee, has been a D1 basketball player,  marketing executive, hospital , SWAT Team Hostage Negotiator, high school basketball coach, and is a father and husband. “I use my 4 Truths to guide the decisions I make in my life…which I have developed over my ten-year battle with melanoma: 1. Control your mind, or it will control you. 2. Embrace the pain and discomfort we all experience in life and use it to make you a stronger and more determined individual. 3. Student, Explorer, Living with OCD & In the Driver's Seat with JJ Kells, Rebroadcast: Be The Good with Kate
Revisiting a beautiful episode focusing on the search for your ions while also working through mental health challenges. Today's guest is not a mental health practitioner, but rather someone who is going to therapy, working through each day, and sharing her struggles and triumphs with others along the way. It takes a lot of strength to do that, and she is helping others by finding ways to incorporate this information and encouragement into her life, in addition to finishing grad school and exploring what's next... JJ Kells comes to us today from Chicago, and while most of us get anxious about not knowing what's next, JJ adds a unique perspective: "I actually don't mind not knowing what's next." She calls herself a "wanderer", and indeed has already had such an interesting, varied life despite a young age. JJ has obsessive compulsive disorder, OCD, and she has worked so hard to ensure SHE runs her life, not it. "It's a part of my experience all day everyday," but listen to how JJ explains her journey discovering so much about herself,  therapy, tactics to cope with the stressors, and more. This month, we've been rebroadcasting episodes each Monday, while releasing new episodes on Fridays. Today's episode is a rebroadcast from June 2022. On Friday, you'll hear from Harry Duran of Podcast Junkies and overall fascinating human. -- **If you enjoyed this episode, please do subscribe and share on social, YouTube, and your favorite podcast platform. A Moment for the Theater Kid, with your host, Kate Cherichello Tente, Ep. 135
A Moment for the Theater Kid, with your host, Kate Cherichello Tente, Ep. 135
It is rare for me to hop on the microphone without a guest, but when I feel pulled with something to share with you, I have to do it! So welcome back to Be The Good with Kate, today a short episode with what I hope is a message that sticks with you.  I may be preaching to the choir as they say, so if you, listener, are saying Yes! That’s correct! I know this already! Then perhaps forward to someone who might be able to use this as well, and let’s continue to work towards bringing the value of the arts to the forefront… Who are we talking about today?  Theater kids. When are we talking?  Childhood to start. How does theater play an important role?  Why does theater play an important role? Where? Well, my story starts in New Jersey and community theater…How about yours? Did you grow up belting every word of the Annie, Sound of Music, and Beauty and the Beast soundtracks?  Did you spend weekends memorizing dances and lines? Did you bond with amazing friends and families in the halls surrounding the auditorium? Are you still waiting for your chance to play Maria in Sound of Music somewhere, anywhere??  (That last one might just be me?) I hope you enjoy this brief episode but are also inspired by what it contains. The reminder, or perhaps realization, of all that the arts offer. It doesn’t mean we have to become professional actors (heck no!). It could mean becoming a successful mathematician. A chemist creating a new medicine. A teacher finding new ways to engage with students. A parent connecting with their child. Listen and let me know your thoughts. Thanks to all who find ways to the arts and recognize the way it affects our lives. **It's your host, Kate Cherichello Tente, here -- Thanks for listening! Former MLB Player, Author, Coach, Disability Advocate Tony Vlahovic, Rebroadcast: Be The Good with Kate
A life-altering event ends a dream career... But leads to such a special journey: Tony Vlahovic reached the pinnacle of baseball: playing for the Boston Red Sox, but when an injury threw him a true curveball, he had to change direction. Using his ion for baseball, Tony found himself in the nonprofit space, channeling his ions to working with the Special Olympics and eventually creating his own non-profit as well, BaseABLE. A beautiful episode to revisit that was originally published in August 2023. I love our chat and the opportunity to hone in on the beauty of working with people with special needs, bringing the sport of baseball to this population, embracing a changing career path, and the power of never ceasing to grow and learn each day in what we do. Mr. Vlahovic started his professional baseball career in Italy where he was named his team’s Rookie of the Year.  Upon returning to the United States he signed with the Boston Red Sox where he played as a left-handed pitcher.  His career prematurely ended due to an auto accident, but he has dedicated his life to teaching, coaching and leading his athletes on and off the field. His efforts were rewarded by receiving Coach of the Year honors five times and was nominated as North American Coach of the Year in 2014.  He  has been honored at the Baseball Hall of Fall in Cooperstown, NY for his dedication to individuals with disabilities playing baseball where his game-worn hat from the Gold medal winning team in 2014 is on display.  Special Olympics New Jersey set an unprecedented standard in the initiation of baseball and Vlahovic was the man for the job.  His technical knowledge and ion for the sport of baseball makes him a natural leader, but his real motivation was to offer the opportunity for individuals with disabilities to play baseball.” ~~ me each week, as I ask an individual five questions about the good they are doing in the world via following their ions. Organization & The Psychology Within It with Laurie Palau, Rebroadcast: Be The Good with Kate
Who feels like they need to be more organized? And who feels so much better mentally when they are in an organized space? Why? Why are we trying to be more organized? Yes today’s guest covers the how…But diving into the ‘why’ of it all really draws me in listening to Laurie Palau, Founder of Simply B Organized and host of This Organized Life. This is a rebroadcast episode that was too good not to share again! I could have talked to Laurie all day. In fact, we ‘swapped podcasts’, so to speak, and you can look for an episode of her show, SImply B Organized, featuring yours truly in the weeks. She is someone who feels like a friend right away. From her website: "I’ve always said that disorganization goes deeper than piles of paper on the counter, dishes in the sink, or an overflowing closet. Clutter is merely a symptom of a bigger issue — resulting in feelings of shame, anxiety, stress, and an overall lack of control." Follow Laurie: simplyborganized.com

Returning to Art Years Later, with Impact: Margaret Malishchak of Glass4Good, Ep. 130
Returning to Art Years Later, with Impact: Margaret Malishchak of Glass4Good, Ep. 130
Stained glass artist Margaret Malishchak proves new chapters don’t have to mean leaving other ions behind for good. After loving creating stained glass as a young adult, Margaret then shifted her focus to her growing family and other aspects of life, her art supplies packed away in her Madison, NJ basement. But this was a ‘see you later’ not a ‘goodbye’-- a great reminder to all of us that we can step away from one ion to focus on another, and it does not have to mean we are leaving it forever. Fast forward more than 25 years, Margaret’s daughter asked about the boxes in the basement. They took out the supplies, and Margaret began again– with a twist. With all the pieces she was creating, she realized she had a way of giving back, and began donating 100% of the sales of ALL her works to charities. Four years later, this continues, and she has donated $15,700 thus far (perhaps even more since this writing!). **Welcome to Be The Good with Kate, the show where guests leave you inspired to uncover your ions, and discover tangible ways to make a difference along the way. ** Additionally, we chat about: -Looking to ways we can utilize our skills to give back -Silent auctions, creating, & community involvement -Stories of Madison, NJ and people she has met through this work -How Margaret chooses the organizations to which she donates -How a hobby can be such a source ‘for good’ Connect with Margaret: Instagram @glass4good2020 tinyurl.com/glass4good2020 **It's your host, Kate Cherichello Tente, here -- Thanks for listening!
